The mobile service providers have been blocking Google’s idea of advancing the digital wallet and payment app by inhibiting access to the phone smart card. Google with the new Android 4.4 KitKat has found a way to circumvent the inhibition by storing payment information in the cloud.
Host Card Emulation (HEC) will allow NFC secure payment by storing payment information in the cloud. This will allow different payment apps including Google wallet on Android platform to make payment through NFC & become career agnostic. HEC will use the same protocol which the contactless card use i.e. ISO/IEC 14443-4 to enable payment. The same protocol can be leveraged for loyalty programs, transit passes and other custom services. Google is working with SimplyTapp to enable the solution.
Google through NFC has enabled both the options of storing data locally on the device or on the cloud through SE provider, thus eventually aiming for device agnostic payment and loyalty information.
